How do we decide what fruit do we actually bear..an apple or a pear?

The hours dwindle to obscurity. The image in the mirror seems to slowly fade away, but we are still left standing at the crossroads waiting for a guide to lead us forth. The internet has seeped into all the corners of the world providing us with information all too fast and slow at the same time. There are countless number of flashy websites informing us about the different body types but has anybody actually sat down to think how do we actually differentiate between an apple and a pear?

What to wear and what not to wear according to your body type is one step ahead from the actual foundation stone. How do we decide what fruit do we actually bear..an apple or a pear?? Lets walk down the Indian lane to find your exact body type. A path walked by a handful with only crumbs of information on the Indian body type.

The answer has been searched by yet so many and actually found by yet so few. The steps are very simple to reach an effective conclusion. To know your actual body type you should first be wearing fitting undergarments, nothing too tight or loose because wrong measurements can lead to disastrous effects. Fooling the world by wearing wrong undergarments can end up with you making a fool out of yourself.  After stripping to your bare minimums measure your bust, waist and hips. Make sure that the tape is kept parallel to the floor and is neither too tight nor too loose. Ask for help from your friend if needed. Measure your bust at the fullest part keeping the tape straight against the back. Then move down to your waist and measure it at the narrowest part which is almost an inch above the belly button.  Measuring the hips at the fullest part will give you your hip size. Again remember to keep the tape straight across the hips.

The right measurements of your body means that the major part of your battle is won and all that is left to tackle is with the fruit (body type) category. What will help you define your body and personality has been listed down below:

The Apple – Apple is a body with average breasts, a slightly wider waistline and a flat bottom. The bust is generally an inch or 2 lesser than the waist and the bottom is about 2-3 inches more than your bust. They tend to have thinner arms and/or legs.

The Pear – The pear is also largely known as the ‘triangle’ or ‘spoon’ body, with narrow shoulders, average bust, a defined waist and large hips. The hips are four inches or more than the bust and the waist is minimum of 7-8 inches lesser than the bottom. They generally have wider legs.

The Strawberry– The strawberry or the inverted triangle is for females with narrow hips, varying bust line, broad shoulders and a straight waist. The shoulders or the bust line is generally the dominating part of the body and the bust is about 3-4 inches larger than the hips. And there is very little difference between the waist and the hips maybe about 1-2 inches. Such body types generally have slender legs and fuller arms.

The Banana– The banana is also known as the rectangle body type. The waist and the hips are almost equal in size with the waist being about an inch or two less than the bust or hips. Such body types generally have long legs and limbs in accordance to their hips/bust.

The Hourglass– Popularly known as the X figure it is a body type with curves to flaunt. Such body types have a similar bust and hips (Give or take 1 inch) and the if the difference between the waist and the bust/hips is approximately 9-10 inches then your figure is a perfect X and worth making the other girls turn green. Such body types have slender limbs.

The Round– Round figures generally have no defined waist, hips or bust. All the three of them are merged together.

The most important thing to know is your body type. Knowing your body shape and what category you fall in, is like half the battle won. Basically there are six kinds of female body types:

  • Smaller top and wider bottom or the triangle body type and more popularly known as the pear shaped body
  • Bigger top and smaller bottom or the inverted triangle
  • Similar size top, waist and bottom or the rectangle or banana body type
  • Almost same size top and bottom with a narrow waist, popularly known as the hourglass figure
  • Narrow top and bottom and a wider waist line known as the diamond figure
  • Heavy bust line and hips with a wide waistline is also known as the round body type.

Now is where the drama unfolds. After knowing what body type you fall under comes the part where you need to decide what kind of clothes, colour and print will suit your body type. There is a universal rule which should be followed religiously. Black makes a person look slimmer while white makes a person look fuller.

Smaller top and wider bottom or the triangle body type: Females with such a body type generally have an average bust and narrow shoulders with fuller hips. Mostly the middle aged Indian women sport such a body type. If you fall under this category then one of the most appropriate dresses for you are the ones with empire line. Such dresses, tops or kurtis will make your bust look fuller and in proportion to your hips. Do not go for tops crinching around the waist as they will emphasize your hips. Wear tops which end a little below your hips. You can also wear tops with horizontal stripes around the bust area to make them look fuller. As for bottoms, avoid slim fit jeans and mini skirts.

Bigger top and smaller bottom or the inverted triangle: Girls falling under this category should wear tops with vertical stripes to de-emphasize the upper torso of their body. Avoid dresses with power shoulders. Team up your dresses with broad belts as they will lay emphasis on your waist and hips. As for bottoms wear skirts with volume or try the tiered or pleated skirts. Avoid huge prints on the body and stick to monochrome colours or tiny prints.

Almost same size top and bottom with a narrow waist, popularly known as the hourglass figure: The most envied figure of all times. Popularly known for its perfect size and shape this figure has grabbed a lot of called and uncalled for attention. Females with an hourglass body type should wear fitting clothes which naturally reveal their curves. Low neck tops look sexy. Avoid empire line or loose dresses or tops as they will hide your figure. As for bottoms, sport the low waist fitting bottoms which will show off your curves. Pencil shirts and dresses look best on such a body type.

Similar size top, waist and bottom or the rectangle body type: Such females do not sport much of the curves but that should not stop them from looking good. Such body type females should try to create an illusion of curves. Try on different kinds of belts to create interest and to make the waist look slimmer. Power shoulder tops with fitting bottoms will also create an interest. Try bottoms with volume which will make the waist look smaller like pleated, flared or tiered skirts or trousers Avoid teaming up a fitting top with a fitting bottom or vice versa as it will ruin the look.  Different kinds of prints work well with such a body type. Long or ankle length dresses are a perfect fit for any Rectangle body type-Floor length dress wether strapless, print or Maxi type will turn you into a sweetheart.

Smaller top and bottom and a wider waist line known as the diamond figure: Such women should try to de-emphasize their waist by wearing tops loose around their waist. Empire lines should work well with such body types. Such women can experiment with various kinds of necklines. Low waist jeans and broad belts should be avoided. Avoid tops or dresses with bigger prints.


Heavy bust line and hips with a wide waistline is also known as the round body type: Females with such a body type should not feel left out. With the right kind of dressing anybody can create magic. Women with such a body type should wear V-neck and vertical prints as it makes them look slimmer. Smaller prints should be avoided as gives a broader look. Straight cut bottoms look good on such a figure. Tight fitting and tapering bottoms should be avoided.
